From First Call to Final Report

Getting a survey arranged with Bell Marine is straightforward. Here is what to expect from initial enquiry through to delivery of your report.

1

Get in touch

Contact Bell Marine by phone or email with details of the vessel โ€” make, type, length, and approximate age โ€” and the type of survey required. We will provide a quote and agree a convenient date.

2

Arrange access

Agree access to the boat with the owner, marina, or boatyard. A pre-purchase or insurance survey may require the vessel to be lifted out so the hull can be properly inspected.

3

The survey

Magnus carries out a thorough in-person inspection, typically taking a few hours. Clients are welcome to attend and see any findings firsthand.

4

The report

A written report in plain English with detailed photographs is provided within 72 hours, setting out condition, defects, and any remedial work required.

5

Follow-up

Magnus is happy to discuss the findings at any point after delivery โ€” just get in touch with any questions.

Surveys

A Survey for Every Stage of Ownership

Thorough, independent assessments carried out to a consistently high standard, whatever the reason for your survey.

A pre-purchase survey is recommended before committing to the purchase of any vessel. The survey provides a thorough, independent assessment of the boat's condition, covering the hull, deck, structure, machinery, electrical systems, and safety equipment. Any defects are clearly identified along with an indication of the remedial work required. A pre-purchase survey gives buyers the information they need to proceed with confidence โ€” or to renegotiate.

Insurers frequently require a current condition survey before arranging or renewing cover, particularly for older vessels. An insurance survey assesses the structural integrity and core systems of the vessel โ€” including hull, rig or engines, and safety equipment โ€” and provides a valuation. The completed report meets the requirements of leading underwriters and can be submitted directly to a broker or insurer.

Book an Insurance Survey

A condition and valuation survey provides an independent assessment of the vessel's current market value alongside a general overview of its condition. This type of survey is commonly required for financing purposes, estate matters, or when an up-to-date valuation is needed. The survey is generally conducted with the vessel in the water and focuses on accessible areas and overall condition.

A damage survey determines the nature, extent, and likely cause of damage to a vessel following an incident such as a collision, grounding, flooding, or fire. The survey establishes whether repair is financially viable and, if so, provides a detailed assessment of the work required and the associated costs. Damage surveys are carried out on behalf of vessel owners and insurers, and the resulting report is suitable for submission as part of an insurance claim.

Book a Damage Survey

A sea trial is recommended alongside a pre-purchase survey. It is the most effective way to assess the performance of the engine, propulsion, and steering systems under working conditions. Some characteristics of a vessel can only be properly evaluated when underway. Combining a pre-purchase survey with a sea trial provides the most complete picture of the vessel before purchase.
